Wow what a day… looking back on it now it feels like so much has happened since I awoke with the sunrise this morning in Oregon City. I was lucky enough to be able to crash at my buddy Josh’s house and seriously had an awesome time catching up and shooting the shit about motorcycles and gopros and yardwork (for reals) !
Seriously though it was great to get a fresh start and some advice on routes as I make my way towards the coast. If you are interested, Josh runs an awesome tshirt/apparel/sticker company promoting the northwest outdoors lifestyle. Check it out here at: https://www.facebook.com/thenorthwestcrew
And now that I think about it, I didnt swipe any free NW crew stuff so Im probably gonna have to visit again and steal a bunch of shit. HA! – But on a side note, thanks for the grapes, and honey nut cherrios, and coffee!
From Oregon City it was a short jaunt on the freeway down to Salem OR, a quick bite to eat and then a few zigs and zags around the city towards highway 22, then a hop on 223, followed by hwy 20 to the coast. Only 90 miles total from Salem to Newport but plenty to stop and see on the way. Truly this is a great route for a motorcycle with the awe inspiring scenery and so much to take in from a landscape perspective… and I had a blast on the curves!
Heres some video to really show you the beauty of this area and how fun it can be on two wheels:
At the end of this video I happened across this historic covered bridge and was compelled to stop and I am sure glad I did. It was rad to walk through this and see the old construction and the peaceful creek below.
Had to pose for a shot as well:
And Hey, why not mark my passing through:
Apparently this bridge has some history, kinda neat to read:
In fact, covered bridges are kind of a thing on this road, and I made quick detour 2 miles out of the way when the sign came up for the Harris Covered bridge. Cuz Im all romantical and whimsical and stuff:
After getting my nostalgia on it was time for a quick pit stop at Burnt Woods Store (on Burnt Woods Road) to gas up and water up before making the last leg to Newport and the coast.
Holy hell the coast is cold! Immediately the temp dropped 10 degrees at least. Great riding down the 101 helped eleviate any discomfort though and got a couple good shots of the ocean as I arrived:
About 30 minutes south of Newport is Yachats, my destination – specifically the Silver Surf Motel. Decently priced and right on the water, the balcony view did not disappoint:
At this point it I was famished so I rode down the 101 a few miles to Yachats proper and hit up the local fish and seafood restaurant Luna Sea Fish House for some rad fish tacos. Hit the local grocery for some yogurt and an apple for the morning and then back to the hotel, but first got this shot of the coast at Yachats:
Now finally settled for the night, I watched the sun come down against the constant ocean waves and felt immensely grateful for all I have seen and experienced today:
Tomorrow, more awesomeness will ensue!
Travis
